Emma

June 4, 2024

Emma is a very special little dog – here’s her rescue story:

A property owner saw a little cream colored dog coming in/out of his property and crawling under his shed. He set out some food and water, which she eagerly ate and drank but she kept her distance. A few days later, he heard some noises and realized she had given birth, but couldn’t see under the shed. He asked for help and we came to assess.

Mama Emma was smart. She had the puppies hidden – you couldn’t see under the shed and she was literally army crawling from the far side where there was a small opening. We took a borescope (inspection camera) and looked on all sides and finally visualized a pile of puppies but there was no opening for us to access.

Since Emma was too skittish to approach, we had to humanely trap her so she wouldn’t move the puppies further in. We then quickly started digging under the shed with our hands, reached in and started blindly pulling puppies out. Final count was 6 puppies (and a lost glove) that we excavated. We checked with the camera to make sure all puppies were removed. They were beautiful little puppies – 2 weeks old – teeny tiny but healthy and clean.

We immediately reunited Emma with her puppies and she continued to be a vigilant, attentive and loving mom. She nursed them round the clock, kept them clean and played with them. Despite her fear and worry, Emma started to warm up to her wonderful foster whom she has learned to trust.

She is definitely a pup who will bond tightly to her person. Emma will need a patient and loving person who will guide her, build her confidence and understand that she will need time and space to decompress and trust. She is so sweet – she dances when she sees her foster mom and loves treats and attention. She will make an awesome companion. Now it’s Emma’s turn to be loved and find her forever home.

Energy Level? Medium, still has playful young energy.

House trained? Emma has been good about going potty outside in the yard, but as with any dog in a new environment, they will need to learn where to potty.

What is her ideal home? Someone who will have lots of time to spend with her, continue to build her confidence and provide her with lots of positive experiences. She is skittish so she will need supervision in a secure yard and will not be a candidate for off leash adventures.

Describe how they are on a leash. She has been doing great on leash

Describe how they are with other dogs? Emma lives with two dogs and is good with well mannered dogs. Her current best friend is the resident chihuahua whom she loves to play with.

What are their favorite things? Playing with her puppies, chewing on toys and treats, and snuggling with her foster mom.

What do they need to work on? Emma is still learning the world and is fearful of new people and situations.

How are they when left alone? How long have they been left alone? She has been alone for up to 8 hours and has been fine.

Where do they sleep? She sleeps in her bed.

What is their ideal home? Emma’s perfect home will be a patient and calm family who can give her lots of time and space to get comfortable, as the world is pretty scary for her. Once she’s comfortable with you and all settled in, she is an excellent companion and you will be the center of her attention.
