Update on Mr. Snow 6/10/2021
Mister Snow’s foot is healing well! At first he growled at caretakers, but now he allows the foot to be cleaned and checked by his foster. The skin almost grew back in the area of amputation. The ‘shoe’ to help protect the healing part has been ordered, but he does not yet let his caretakers put it on. He eats pretty well, and we were told, he is more friends with cats. Mr. Snow is still afraid for the most part though, so the rescue had decided to give him more time to just relax and get acclimated. It looks like he may need another month or more to get used to his current environment. The stump should form and then we will send a photo of the paw to where the prostheses are made.
From his foster’s opinion, it sounds like Mr. Snow is not an easy dog. He needs to get used to people taking care of him, most likely he never experienced any human touch or care. He uses this paw (what’s left of it), when he starts to fall while trying to walk, he leans on it for balance.
For now Mr. Snow is good there, considering what had happened, he is safe and is in good hands. He also is practicing walking on just two legs, which is a pretty tough task. Mr. Snow is not yet allowing his caregivers to get measurements of the foot for the prosthesis. At some point he also will need to undergo a CT scan in Moscow for the prosthesis (but that is much later)..
We are still fundraising to cover Mr. Snow with medical bills, recovery and prosthetic costs.
Since the shelter is overcrowded and under-resourced, every additional sick animal adds to their already very tight budget. It is hard to even imagine how these few volunteers can manage to feed this rising shelter population.
THANK YOU!
Update on Mr. Snow 5/26/2021:
Mr. Snow, a tripod homeless pup, who got trapped in a bear trap, is resting after the amputation, the surgeon only removed as little as possible the minimum, only the parts that had necrosis and inflamed portion of the paw at this time. In hopes for a future prosthesis. Since there is a risk of being left with only two paws, it is critically important to have Mr. Snow in a medical foster family, where the operated paw can heal and grow new skin. It is important prior to even considering fitting prosthesis to have the surgery site completely healed. They are also looking into finding a protective ‘ shoe’ of some sort, to have the remainder of the paw healed and avoid new injury.
Finding a prosthesis is a long process, they will be looking for the right specialists.. But even if they find someone to do it, the paw must be completely healed. And this is the hardest part, and a few months long process.
The shelter who are helping Mr. Snow is already up to their necks with medical bills for their other sick animals, so we are fundraising to help them cover the surgery, recovery, medical boarding and prosthetic costs.
Since the shelter is overcrowded and under-resourced, every additional sick animal adds to their already very tight budget. It is hard to even imagine how these few volunteers can manage to feed this rising shelter population.
Thank you for your continuous support!
Mr. Snow's story (5/19/2021):
It is hard to be a homeless dog living on the streets. It is much harder when you only have 3 legs… Our newest rescue – Mr. Snow – is a true survivor! He’s a tripod boy, who has been living in the streets for a while. He had his right front paw amputated a while ago, due to some past trauma, and it is not clear who did this, but he was released back on the streets.
A few days ago his hind left paw got trapped in a bear trap! Mr.Snow did not get any help for a while, so the wounded leg got infected as a result. By the time volunteers heard about him, and rushed to find the poor dog an affected part had to be urgently amputated. Now Mr. Snow is left with only 2 legs! At the moment, he is getting pain killers, antibiotics and lots of rest. He is a very challenging case, because he would need to be transported from Volgograd, Russia to a specialized clinic in a different city to get a proper amputation to be able to be fitted with a prosthesis.
Our wonderful volunteers have done the research, and found out that there might be a chance for Mr. Snow to walk on 2 legs with the help of the prosthesis, but his transportation, surgery, recovery and prosthesis will run up a very high bill!
Please give Mr. Snow a chance to live and to walk, and to hopefully find a caring family to love and be loved!
